Nestled in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara at 117 W De La Guerra St, Elsies Tavern is far more than your typical watering hole—it’s a vibrant blend of pub, beer hall, coffee shop, and cozy lounge, offering a rare sanctuary for locals and visitors alike. This cash-only gem effortlessly balances the charm of a classic dive bar with the warmth of a community living room, where everyone—from the dressed-up to the laid-back—feels instantly at home.
Elsies Tavern’s unique character shines through in its thoughtfully curated drink selections. Beer lovers can revel in an impressive roster of brews on tap, including crowd-pleasers like Anchor Steam, Boont Anderson Valley, and the smooth Guinness, alongside craft highlights like Lindeman's Raspberry Lambic and Pizza Port Shark Bite Red Ale. For those leaning towards the finer notes of wine, the featured whites paint a global picture—from the crisp Santa Barbara Winery Sauvignon Blanc to the elegant La Grande Caillou Chenin Blanc of France, and even the distinctive Huber Zweigelt Rosé from Austria. Complement your drink with a refreshing kombucha or a classic soda, easily enjoyed while soaking in the café-style atmosphere enhanced by reliable Wi-Fi and a welcoming tea house vibe.
The ambiance here is a masterclass in laid-back sophistication and unpretentious fun. Guests praise the inviting front bar area, perfect for striking up conversations over a frothy pint or a glass of wine, while the back patio offers a private, relaxed space ideal for groups, casual meetups, or celebrating birthdays. This outdoor nook is a favorite among patrons who enjoy a smoke or bring their furry friends—reflecting the tavern’s inclusive and homey spirit.
Visitors consistently highlight the tavern’s rarity as a genuine “third place,” a social anchor where meaningful connections are made without the overpowering noise typical of many bars. John Hayward sums it up perfectly, calling it “a hidden gem” with cozy couches, a pool table, and “good music” that sets the tone without drowning out dialogue. Hannah Bangs echoes this sentiment, emphasizing Elsies’ timeless feel and the freedom to be yourself, while Stephen Morand fondly recalls the warmth and humor of bartender Ian, who transformed a missed bloody Mary hunt into one of their favorite stops. Neil McLaughlin’s note about being welcomed with his dog only adds to the sense that Elsies Tavern is truly a home away from home, a place where you’re more than just a customer—you’re part of an extended family.
Whether you’re seeking a quiet corner with a cup of tea or coffee, craving a perfectly poured craft beer, or looking to unwind with friends over a game of pool, Elsies Tavern provides a richly textured experience that captures the essence of the Santa Barbara scene. It is a rare sanctuary where authenticity reigns, laughter flows easily, and the spirit of community is palpable. For those who value atmosphere as much as their drink, Elsies is not just a bar—it’s an enduring local treasure that invites you to slow down, connect, and savor the moment.

A hidden gem in Santa Barbara, off the beaten path, super- funky dive, great little bar in the front and a charming back patio for groups and birthdays and where the bad kids smoke. Pool table, couches, secluded tables and good music. A must visit.
Elsies is such an amazing hidden gem, I almost don't want to leave a review to expose how incredible it is. As a cash only, beer & Wine bar, it feels like stepping back in time. What I love most is that I can show up dressed up, or dressed down, and be welcome no matter what. Love this place! If you want to see some of the real SB scene, you must stop here :)
Great dive bar we stumbled upon while up here for our daughter's wedding. My wife and I were looking for bloody Mary's to kick start our morning, but Unfortunately they only serve beer and wine. Once we met our friendly and funny bartender Ian, we decided to stay, and we weren't disappointed.
Non descript little gem hiding out a bit, but once inside ya know you’re home. Welcomed my doggy sweetheart, we hung on back patio with another pooch and the smokers. Can’t wait to return on next SB visit.
No better place, no better community. One of the last bastions of a third place where people can be social and make connections. (You can actually hear each other when trying to have a conversation).
The only place chess is played over days or weeks. Credit cards, no thank you. Roots mixed in with structural elements in the patio, yes please. Conversations about anything and everything are possible. Vapes are forbidden and camel cigarettes required. You’re not sure if the pool players have been keeping score but they’ve been there all night. Weird, cool, hip, rare these days. Stay awesome Elsies.
Love this place, super sleepy vibes so make the final destination but it’s incredible. Sometimes the staff can get a bit ego-trippy but whatever take what can get lol.
The only bar I go to in the world. Best prices, love the people there. Also a great cafe weekday mornings. Underrated
